CivLive is a live-streamed simulation run by its channel owner. This policy explains what information the stream software handles and why.
What we access
Using the channel owner's Google authorisation, the software reads the live chat of the channel's
own broadcasts through the YouTube Data API, creates, starts, retitles and ends the channel's own
broadcasts, and answers viewers' information commands (such as !me, !top and
!help) with short replies in that broadcast's chat, posted from the channel's own account.
It does not upload videos, or access any viewer's Google account or any other channel's data.
What we use and keep
- Chat messages: the display name, channel ID and text of each message are used in memory during the stream to count votes, collect name suggestions, enforce cooldowns and address replies (a reply mentions the viewer's display name in the broadcast's chat). Chat messages are not written to disk. A name that chat chooses by vote may be given to a place or people in the simulation and shown on stream; it is not linked to the viewer who suggested it.
- A baby named after you: the first time you chat during a show, the first word of your moderated display name may be given to the next baby born in the simulation and shown on stream. It is saved with the simulation under a one-way hashed ID (not the channel ID itself).
- Adopted villagers: a Super Chat can adopt a villager or bring a small blessing to the simulation. The supporter's moderated display name and a one-way hashed ID are saved with the simulation so their villager, and that villager's descendants, can be credited on stream.
- Predictions: viewers who join a prediction are recorded under a one-way hashed ID with their moderated display name and points. Points reset each calendar month.
- Super Chats and Super Stickers: the event ID, display name, amount and currency as reported by YouTube, and any message, are stored so each one is thanked exactly once. The message is deleted as soon as the thank-you is given.
- Operational logs record technical events (such as connection errors and the YouTube API calls the software makes). They do not record chat messages or viewers' names.
How long we keep it
Nothing we receive from YouTube is kept for more than 30 days. Anything tied to a viewer (a baby named after them, an adoption, prediction points) is kept for 30 days after that viewer last took part in the chat or sent a Super Chat; taking part again refreshes it with the display name YouTube shows at that time. After that it is deleted automatically: the simulation forgets the viewer's ID, an adopted family line is credited to "a viewer", and a baby named after them takes a new name in the simulation's own records. Super Chat records are deleted 30 days after they are received, and log entries 30 days after they are written. Backup copies of the simulation are cleaned the same way.
Service providers
- OpenAI: game state, and viewers' moderated display names, name suggestions and Super Chat messages, may be sent to OpenAI to generate narration and to check messages for harmful content.
- YouTube / Google: the stream and chat are hosted by YouTube under YouTube's Terms of Service and Google's Privacy Policy.
The narrator's voice is generated on the channel owner's own computer; narration is not sent to a voice service. We do not sell or share information for advertising, and we do not use it for any purpose other than running the stream.
Google API Services
CivLive's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The channel owner can revoke access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Your choices
You can watch and take part without sending chat messages or Super Chats. To ask about, or request deletion of, anything we hold about you (a baby named after you, an adopted villager's credit, your prediction points or a Super Chat record), email us with your display name and the approximate time. We delete it within 7 days.
